Tucked inside the Great Smoky Mountains, Cades Cove is one of the most iconic locations in East Tennessee for couples photos. Between the open fields, mountain views, and historic buildings, it creates the perfect setting for photos that feel both timeless and personal.
This recent couples session is a perfect example of that balance. This photo spot has everything from simple moments, beautiful light, and a location that does half the storytelling for you.
Why Cades Cove is Perfect for Couples Photos
If you’re planning a couples or engagement session in the Smoky Mountains, Cades Cove is one of the best places you can choose.
Here’s why:
Historic charm – The preserved churches and cabins add a unique, timeless feel
Scenic variety – Open fields, wooded areas, and mountain backdrops all in one loop
Soft, natural light – Especially in the morning or near sunset
For this session, we centered part of the shoot around some of the historic churches by using both the exterior and interior spaces to create two completely different moods.
A Mix of Light, Emotion, and Storytelling
We started just outside one of the churches, capturing those natural, in-between moments. The kind that aren’t overly posed but feel genuine and relaxed. The doorway created a perfect frame, keeping the focus on connection while still highlighting the character of the building.

From there, we stepped inside.
The light coming through the window created a completely different atmosphere. It was soft, directional, and a little more intimate. These quieter moments often end up being some of the most meaningful, giving space for real emotion without distraction.

To wrap up, we stepped back outdoors to take in the sweeping mountain views that make Cades Cove so iconic. Framed by the rolling Smoky Mountains, these shots place the couple within the landscape itself, highlighting not just their connection to each other, but also the peaceful, scenic beauty that surrounds them.
What to Wear for a Cades Cove Couples Session
One thing this couple did really well was keeping their outfits simple and neutral.
If you’re planning your own session, here are a few tips:
Stick to earth tones or soft neutrals (they photograph beautifully in the Smokies)
Avoid busy patterns or logos
Choose outfits that feel comfortable and true to you
Bring layers if your session is in the morning or evening
The goal is to complement the scenery, not compete with it.
Best Time for Photos in Cades Cove
Timing can make a big difference in how your photos turn out.
Early morning: Soft light, fewer crowds, peaceful atmosphere
Golden hour (before sunset): Warm tones and glowing light
Midday: Brighter and more contrast (can still work well with shaded areas like the church)
For sessions like this one, we often use a mix of light from the bright outdoor scenes to the softer indoor or shaded moments.
